Steep – Climbing Mediterranean

For those who want to climb higher, stand steadier – and feel the adrenaline in steep terrain!

🧗‍♀️ The experience on the line

You will get to practice both indoor and outdoor climbing, learn safety, equipment and technique – and build confidence in both your body and rope.
We use climbing centers in Hallingdal, natural cliffs and bouldering areas, and go on trips to Hemsedal, Gol and Hallingskarvet for real mountain climbing and summit hikes.

🍂 Autumn

Even before the first line trip, you will receive a steep course , so that everyone is ready for the first line week.
We start the season with first aid courses , bouldering and climbing techniques , and work on sport climbing, trad climbing and multi-pitch climbing on cliffs in the local area.
When the autumn colours arrive, we head to Stryn and Folven Camping – a paradise for both climbing and sea kayaking . There we live close to nature, challenge ourselves on the wall, paddle in the river and build a strong bond in the group.

☀️ Spring and line trip

In the middle of the school year, we will be in Klatrebobla – a week-long trip to the Mediterranean, with sun and warm mountain walls.
There we live and breathe climbing from morning to night, practicing technique, challenging ourselves and enjoying the company in the sun.

❄️ Winter

When winter descends on the mountains, we move from rock to snow and ice.
You will learn winter travel on a mountain tour , downhill skiing techniques , and receive avalanche courses with practical exercises throughout the season.
We practice winter first aid and avalanche rescue , and really get to experience the community in demanding and magnificent surroundings.
In addition, there will be ice climbing and longer mountain ski tours over several days – such as from Hemsedal to Tyin or across the Hardangervidda plateau .
This is real winter outdoor life – raw, educational and unforgettable.

🌄 Towards spring

When the days get brighter, we pack our bags for an adventure week in Romsdalen or Jotunheimen , where we combine climbing, mountain hiking and spectacular scenery.
Throughout the year we work towards certifications in climbing and mountain safety , and you will develop both strength, technique and mental focus.

In short: A year filled with altitude, adrenaline and mastery – right in the heart of mountainous Norway. 🏔💪

👨‍🏫 Emil Bakken– Teacher at Bratt

Emil is a teacher in the Bratt line at Hallingdal Folk High School.
He is passionate about steep outdoor activities and tries to get out at any time of the year – with an ice axe in his hands, skis on his feet or climbing shoes on limestone in the Mediterranean .

He has studied outdoor activities for four years , and has taken one year of further education with PPU , which together make up the Outdoor Activities Teacher package!
During his education, he lived in his car for three years while traveling around the country climbing and skiing – an adventure that has given him invaluable experience with both nature, endurance and a simple lifestyle.

Emil is now training to become a Peak Guide through Nortind , the highest certification one can obtain within steep outdoor activities in Norway.
For you as a student, this means that you will learn the newest, safest and most up-to-date methods for traveling in the mountains - both summer and winter.

🏔️ Some highlights:

  • 4-year bachelor's degree in outdoor activities + PPU

  • Under training to become a Tinde Guide (Nortind.no)

  • Over 10 years of experience with climbing, skiing and mountain guiding

  • Lived in a car for 3 years while traveling around Norway to climb and ski

  • Experience as a teacher for both children, youth and adults

As a teacher, Emil is concerned with relationships, security and coping .
He creates an environment where students can challenge themselves, experience joy and mastery in their encounter with nature – and at the same time be safe along the way.

“Through the steep outdoor life, you experience both joy, fear and mastery.
My job as a teacher is to ensure that YOU get to experience these feelings, be pushed when you need it, and supported when needed – all within a safe framework.” 💪

🌄 Outside the line

When Emil is not teaching, you can usually find him hanging from a rope, skiing in the mountains, or heading south in his car.
This fall he drove down to Spain to climb until the New Year – so if he doesn't answer right away, he's probably in the middle of a route somewhere in the sun 😄🧗‍♂️
